We hear alot of music through the multiple channels we accept music. Musicsubmit.com is one of those channels and I must say since working with the great team over there, this submission from Nino Polizzi is one of the best one’s yet. Check out this interview with Nino about his new single and some of the other things going on in his music life.
Why did you select this song as your current single?
“When The River Thaws” quickly became the song that I am most proud of writing after my first draft of the lyrics. I chose this song because it is the most story-driven song that I have written. Musically, it also has the sound that describes my music well.
How does this single relate to the rest of the Album, EP or Mix-tape?
The songs that I chose for this EP all deal with some form of love. The lyrical tone of “When The River Thaws” is very similar to my song “Loving Arms”. Both deal with some form of heartbreak and something coming in the way of love; “When the River Thaws” dealing with a physical barrier to love and “Loving Arms” dealing with an emotional barrier.
What was the writing process for the song?
I actually wrote the lyrics for this song while on a trip to Lake Placid, NY. I was very inspired by the history of the lake and its residents so I began thinking of a song based around a body of water. Once the lyrics were set the music came to me very naturally and quickly. Getting to explore the mountains and lakes of New York opened up my mind musically to new thoughts and ideas.
What does this song’s lyric mean to you?
I write many songs in the hopes that people will be able to identify with some part of the words they are hearing, even if it is not the story that I was meaning to convey. The song itself is about a boy who falls in love with a girl across a river. He buys a boat, goes to her, and they live a happy life for a while. Problems arise when the girl gets sick and they become stuck on her side of the river due to the wintery conditions of the river, thus cutting her off from medical help until the spring arrives. She passes away before the river thaws and the boy is reminded of her every time the spring returns. While it was a specific story in my head, I wrote this song with a vague tone in hopes to connect with anyone who has lost a love one, whether it be by breakup or death. It is up to the listener to decide if the river is real or metaphorical.
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
Although I have not performed this song in front of an audience yet, I always sing this song in a somber and quiet mood. It is not meant to be loud and obnoxious, rather quiet so the listener can fully listen to the story.
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
Yes, in terms of both the instrumentation and lyrics. I mainly write acoustic songs with a focus on the lyrics and this song fits my sound very well.
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
There is no video planned at the moment, but I am working on some video ideas for the near future.
One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
I have always loved writing music. I think that it is incredible that in this age of technology, independent artists are able to get their music into thousands of ears around the world. I am incredibly motivated by the fact that I am able to create music that will be heard by people around the world and the possibility of connecting with fans on an emotional level.
