The Turnaround

We had a chance to speak with rising star Matt Colligan and we took it. Check out the interview below as we go indepth with Matt about his current single, “The Turnaround.”
So, why did you select this song as your single?
The decision to release this particular single was not strategic. I’ll be releasing a single every 2-3 months, so I don’t feel any pressure to release songs based on specific features or topics. Perhaps I will after releasing a few songs.
How does this single relate to the rest of the Album, EP or Mix-tape?
I think there’s great disparity in songwriting for this collection of songs. Although I won’t be releasing these songs as a compilation, I’ve been working hard at writing melodies and lyrics that are a bit out of my comfort zone. I think that’s the only way to really grow as a songwriter and will likely produce a diverse collection of songs.
What was the writing process for the song?
I decided to use an alternate tuning for this one because I felt as though I was gravitating to similar chords and progressions otherwise. Using foreign tunings ultimately requires me to use my ears to sound out a song, which typically results in some pretty unique songwriting.
What does this song’s lyric mean to you?
This song means a lot to me because it’s not a fictional story or character. This song was written about a very good friend of mine. It’s conversational in nature and is an accurate depiction of the type of interactions that I’ve had with this person.
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
I think that it would be evident that this song is personal to me. I give everything I have when I play live and want to make sure that everyone in the room recognizes that. I’m really grateful for everyone there listening and it’s a privilege to share my music.
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
I think so. I find great satisfaction in writing sincere songs, and I think this song fits the mold.
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
Yes, the video was released last week. There’s no real story behind the video, but Joe Vulpis of JRV Films did a wonderful job of creating an artistic performance piece. The video is simply an acoustic performance in a beautiful setting.
One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
I think that making music is primarily selfish ambition. I love doing it and couldn’t imagine life without music. However, I love sharing my music with anyone who is willing to listen and with those who can use the songs in a meaningful way. I love the concept of using music to improve the quality of life of those who can use an improvement of that nature.
