Nine Lies

Nine Lies are an Alternative Rock Band from Belfast in Northern Ireland, Formed in 2003 and consisting of Stevie Mann (Lyrics/Vocals/Production), Dave Kernohan & Nick Black (Guitars), John Rossi (Bass) and Stephen McAuley [Stoogie] (Drums).

The Band’s new album and long awaited follow up to the critically acclaimed debut Behind it All, ‘9 Lies’ is available worldwide from July 2015. Davey Kernohan said “It’s been a long time coming. We have had stacks of EPs and singles as you know, but this is our first actual album since Behind It All and we are super excited. It’s an eclectic collection of tunes with themes I couldn’t even have dreamt of writing about or seeing if it hadn’t been for the past few years.”
We had a chance to interview them on their new single, “Tragedy” and this is what they had to say.

Why did you select this song as your current single?
The song Tragedy is more than just a gateway for the new album; it sets the conscience for it. Tragedy is literally that!  A song about the accidental deaths of the Penlee lifeboat crew on a Christmas morning. The volunteers went on the call to a stricken vessel in a freezing sea where they lost their lives. We wanted to make sure that their lives and sacrifice for the best of others was not forgotten and this was important to our decision to not side line the theme of this track but to put it front and forward, while hopefully raising awareness of the volunteer work of the lifeboat associations.
How does this single relate to the rest of the Album?
Tragedy fits in as the bitter lemon of reality on an album that also deals with lust, deceit and broken hearts. It’s part of the 360
What was the writing process for the song?
The track started with a guitar riff from Dave. It played around in my head for a few months before the lyrics truly came together. In the end I locked myself away in the car a made the first lyric draft on the back of an envelope that I found in the door. You have to deal with the inspiration as it comes, and for this song that was one of those moments, under an oak tree!
In the end once recorded I found it lacked a hook that gave that feel of families left at the dinner table on Christmas lunch as their loved ones left for the last time.  After speaking to Dave, he agreed and promptly emailed me from his iPhone with the required guitar line.  It was that perfect that the producer decided to not rerecord it but to use what was put down with the guitar plugged into the phone.  I love all of that! Sometimes modern writing and recording has lost its zing and everything becomes too clinical but on this occasion it was raw!
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
Not just this song, but most songs on this album I just get lost singing them.  I go with them on location without leaving the stage. The whole process and where it arrived has been a pinnacle for us. It arrived just where we wanted it to be, with the mix of songs we wanted. I still find myself singing in the bath so they must be ok!! If not, I’m driving the neighbors more insane than usual!
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
I don’t think it’s a Nine Lies song per-say. We don’t normally deal with themes so serious, and when we do we might have 2 serious lines followed by one to take the Mick or lighten the mood. That just doesn’t happen in Tragedy, It really is a heavy mother!
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
There is indeed a video. We didn’t want the band getting in the way of the message and theme which was trying to raise awareness of the lifeboats at work, so the video literally has real footage of the lifeboats at work saving lives. Nothing more, nothing less!
One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
Good question!  It may well be some sort of insanity.  The long nights and every spare moment we spend and are driven internally to spend. It’s certainly not sanity! haha
