ARTIST COMMENT:
Why did you select this song as your current single?
Well, there’s the obvious reason of it being arguably my catchiest song. But I also felt like it had a nice balance of representing me as a songwriter, musician, and vocalist. Lyrically, the verses account for some of my more reflective and intellectual musings, but no one ever really notices, because the chorus is so simple and repetitive. I enjoy watching people get into it.
Tell us how this single relates to the rest of the EP?
This song was written in between all of the other songs on the EP. Several were written before and several after, but this song marks the smack center of the process. I think the timing of it is telling because it is sort of a reflective, even borderline depressing song. And in the writing process it came after some heartbreak songs, and just before some more hopeful songs I wrote shortly after. The songs from the EP have a strange chronological quality to them, and “Waiting on the Sun” marks the middle of a long hurting and healing process.
What was the writing process for the song?
I was up crazy late one night (as I often am), and I couldn’t sleep so I decided to get my guitar out and play around with some music ideas I’d been thinking about. The melody for “Waiting on the Sun” was just sort of what came out. The lyrics came pretty quickly because I had recently (like the huge reading nerd that I am) been reading about King Solomon and had read some of his passages in the Old Testament. I always thought he was an interesting Biblical figure because he was sort of a melancholy artist type, and he had a philosophical honesty that had intrigued me. So I based the song off of his musings in the early chapters of Ecclesiastes. He talks about how meaningless life can feel and how we waste time toiling over foolish things. I thought it was so refreshingly honest and felt inspired to write my own version of it. The idea of waiting on the sun isn’t about waiting for the sun to come out and brighten our day, but rather I wrote it from the perspective of humans feeling like servants to the sun, how days just pass one after the other; therefore, we are all like servers just waiting on the sun hand and foot. It’s a little depressing, but it’s an honest emotion to express and the imagery that Soloman uses was so brilliant! I just couldn’t resist creating something like that.
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
This is definitely a song that I feel when I sing it. I can’t deny the energy somehow ingrained in it for me. It’s easy to get into it when I sing because the lyrics are so emotionally charged for me. I also really like playing it on guitar because I play some fun licks. I actually consider myself more of a guitarist than a vocalist, and a lot of people seemed surprised when they see me play riffs.
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
My manager and I have been talking about some storyline possibilities. We are playing with different imagery for people toiling under the sun, etc. It’s still in very infant stages but we are hopping to get something rolling ASAP, so stay tuned!
One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
My motivation for writing and performing music is simply that it’s in me and it won’t be denied. Music has always been a huge part of me and always will. Music is just something I HAVE to do and I love it!
