Known for her exotic looks and her rich voice full of attitude; Chess has managed her career since it started 3 years ago. Since then she has solely managed to gain radio airplay in 3 countries (Australia, Malta, Uk) and online, a number 1 in the Maltese radio charts (Stilettos), Features in magazines (international), online blogs and reviews (international), and newspapers.
Her 2nd EP Tuxedo, managed to get her radio airplay on BBC Introducing, where the single Vanity was described as “a cracker of a tune!!!” by the presenter, and also on Best of British Unsigned. Promotion is still going on for this EP. Chess has just been nominated for Best Solo Artist in Malta at the Malta Music awards.
Check out this great interview about her new single, “Vanity”. This song really sounds like something that should be on the radio. Great song, make sure to listen!
Why did you select this song as your current single?
It was because it is the song with the strongest social message and it’s also quite catchy!
How does this single relate to the rest of the Album, EP or Mix-tape?
Tuxedo, the 2nd song on the EP is quite smooth and daring – quite good to dance to too! Dangerously Beautiful definitely has the best groove and an awesome rap by Chris Birdd. The songs tie in together because of their main focal point – Tuxedo is about an alter ego and Dangerously Beautiful is about judging someone before you get to know them properly. Vanity is about the society’s obsession to be ‘acceptable’. They all talk about issues to do with insecurities.
What was the writing process for the song?
I knew I wanted to write about that subject. And I thought the hook “vanity, va-va-voom” was quite a good place to start! I then toyed with the idea of inserting ideas from Carly Simon’s hit, and decided that it would be a good way to reincarnate her song and ideas for the modern world. Then I just thought of circumstances that make me angry, like when people pretend to be friendly, but slate you behind your back – “You’d like to think they all love you, but there’s a Judas in the crowd”.
What does this song’s lyric mean to you?
It means that you should be yourself, whoever that is, and work hard for your credibility.
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
Dancing my heart out with a couple of fabulous dancers!!! Just having fun and hoping people enjoy the performance!
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
I think they could get a pretty good idea.
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
The video is out now on youtube! I planned 3 scenes – one dance scene, a scene with spiral face-paint which represented the downward spiral of society’s perception, and finally a scene that looked a little luxurious to tie in with the whole idea.
One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
I love music, I love the way it makes me feel and I love the way people react to their favourite songs. It’s something we can’t live without – and if I can give that happiness to someone – then I will feel successful.
