Music: The Alchemists by ANIMALI – France

tipotopANIMALI Latin, adj. : Having the quality of life, vivid, vibrant. Indie Pop quintet from Lyon. Debut EP pompously titled « The spark and three other poorly-produced pieces of music » to be released early 2014
Put together in Lyon in 2013, Animali rises as a newcomer on the Indie Rock scene. Inspired by the psychedelic rock bands from the 70′s, they will be releasing their first EP comes March, 2014. Their music is full of references to important bands such as Pink Floyd or the Grateful Dead. You’ll also find in “The Spark, and three other poorly-produced pieces of music”, more modern musical atmospheres, that remind of the the Flaming Lips, Horrors, …
To illustrate their record single “The Alchemists”, the band trusted Jérémy N’Guyen and Maxime Servoise from Partizan/RoyalPost (Michel Gondry, Warren Fu…) with the production of a music video. The musical impression is being emphasized by the weirdness of the images, playing with senses in a kind of hallucinatory painting. An illusion that takes its roots in the movies of David Lynch, Terry Gilliam or the Wachowsky brothers.
Until summer, the band will be touring in France for the release of their EP, then they will be back in the studio for further recording.
Check out this great interview we did with them after hearing their submission, “The Alchemists“. This is a great song a must listen!
Why did you select this song as your current single?
For our first release, we had first wanted to go for The Spark, the ten-minute piece of music that opens our record. We submitted the idea to our manager, who obviously thought otherwise! So we decided it would be best if we just let him pick the song, and he chose The Alchemists.
How does this single relate to the rest of the Album, EP or Mix-tape?
This is the very first song that we wrote out of the four tracks of the EP. To quite an extent it influenced the writing of the three others, in terms of music and lyrics as well.
What was the writing process for the song?
Before Animali, we were used to writing music first, and then struggle trying to put some words on it. With this record we wanted to work differently, starting with lyrics that mean something to us, and trying to figure out how it should sound like. The Alchemists was the first sample for this new method.
What does this song’s lyric mean to you?
It deals with the world as some of us might see it today, ruled by reason and left with no room for old kinds of knowledge and wisdom. A less spiritual kind of world. Hence the lines about digging graves for your fathers and throwing them in.
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
It could be something worth seeing, unless we fuck it up, royally.
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
We consider ourselves as permanently evolving, and hate the idea of being defined by one song. It does however reflect a certain place that we were at, at some point.
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
We did the video for The Alchemists with Jeremy NGuyen and Maxime Servoise, and we wanted to let them develop and illustrate their idea of the music. There is obviously multiple ways of explaining this video, the exact one belongs only to the authors !
One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
Music is what we like to wake up in the morning to do. That, and a subtle combination of laughing, partying and picking girls up ! Haha !
