Why did you select this song as your current single?
Actually, “Roll For Me” isn’t my EP’s first single. My single is a song I did with a big, Bay Area rapper named IamSu called “Climb That”. But, “Roll For Me” is definitely one of my favorites. I’m really interested in the acoustic guitar based instrumentals. My producer, megaMIKE, and I really spent a lot of time on the production of the song and just going back and forth configuring the arrangement. I actually have another version of this song with different lyrics that I wrote, with a different concept and idea, but I wanted to go with what felt natural and sounded good to me.
How does this single relate to the rest of the Album, EP or Mixtape?
This song is right in the middle of my EP, Exit Black. I wanted to start off the EP with the hitters and club bangers. Then, when you get to this song it totally switches up the mood. I wanted to show my diversity and introduce my audience to the sound that I enjoy most, which is that chill hip hop/r&b vibe.
What was the writing process for the song?
When I heard my producer play that initial guitar riff it immediately grabbed me. I instantly came up with a melody and began piecing together the lyrics to the hook. Once I wrote that, then the verses were pretty much built upon that foundational idea. The hook is usually my base, then I build up from there. Like I mentioned earlier I have another set of lyrics that I wrote. I was up until 3AM rewriting the verses, but at the end of the day it wasn’t me so I stuck with the original idea.
What does this song’s lyric mean to you?
To be honest, I don’t like explaining my lyrics. Sometimes it’s just too personal. Music is the only place I can really be myself and not worry about being judged, so I keep that side of me with my music and performance and away from discussion and interviews. I also think what’s most important is what the lyrics mean to YOU. This song almost has a double meaning as well, so I kinda like letting everyone have their own perception of the song.
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
This is a song that I would love to do with a complete band. I could even picture doing this with just a guitar and maybe a tabla player or a percussionist making a beat on a 5gallon bucket. The setting would definitely be more intimate like an instudio or limited audience type of setting.
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
I would say it’s too early in my music career for that. I haven’t released enough music for people to summarize who I really am.
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
Yes, we are in the process of filming the video. We’re about 80% done, then it can move into post production. I can’t give away too much but I can say it was fun to shoot. It’s a bit different. Dark. Edgy. I was lucky enough to have Melissa Riso (http://melissariso.com/) as the main actress in the video. She’s amazing to work with. Of course, there are some scenes in there that showcase my dancing as well. I can never do a music video without having any dancing.
One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
The pursuit of living a fully content and happy life. I’ve always worked for what I have and paid my dues working the 95, Monday through Friday gig. But, I couldn’t continue going to a job that doesn’t make me happy. Fifty years from now I’d rather look back on my life saying that I did everything that I wanted to do and had no regrets, rather than saying I wish I could go back and do it all differently. I’d rather say I wish I could go back and do it all over again one more time.
