ARTIST COMMENT:
Why did you select this song as your current single?
I feel like this song best represents the path that I want to take my music, and the message I want to portray to people.
How does this single relate to the rest of the Album, EP or Mix-tape?
This song is not attached to an EP or album, it’s on it own. My plan is to release songs when they get finished rather than put out a collection of songs. I do this because I’ve found that songs get lost in the mix when you put out a whole album, and the way the business is now, it’s all focused on singles.
What was the writing process for the song?
I wrote this song with Matt Bronleewe, whom I had worked with a few times before. We collaborated on lyrics and melody, and he did the track.
What do this song’s lyrics mean to you?
I came to Matt with the frustration of people telling me what I can and cannot do because of my age or because I’m a girl. It made me want to prove them wrong. We ended up writing about how important it is to stand out and not conform to society, which has always been something I’ve believed in.
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
I have a great band behind me when I perform. I tend to feed off of their energy, so we have a lot of fun with this song. It’s definitely the most energetic song of my set.
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
I think so. It tells a lot about how I choose to live my life, like never conforming to society. I’m not afraid to push back. Musically it portrays the edge that I have throughout all my songs.
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
We just released the music video this month. This video is kind of my baby, because I wrote up the treatment for it. This is the first video I was so hands on with. The concept was a post apocalyptic paintball war. I wanted it to be epic and different, but to also tell the story from the lyrics. In the video, it is my band against a group of “bad guys.” After the “war” between us, it gets down to me and the main bad guy. In the end, I defeat him.
One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
I’ve found that my life without music is empty. I’ve been raised around music my whole life, so it is a part of me. It is my way of communicating my thoughts and feelings, but also a way of getting out the message that I want to share. I’ve always wanted to encourage people to be who they are, and be okay with who they are. To never change for other people, and to be different to make a difference.
