Music: More Than Ever by Skylight – Johannesburg, South Africa

From left, Peter Klein, Bradley Cumming, Greg Jorden, Wesley AyliffeSkylight, with their inspiring pop rock repertoire, brings a fresh new perspective on musical craftsmanship to the forefront of popular culture. Made up of four accomplished musicians – Greg Jorden (vocals and rhythm guitar), Wesley Ayliffe (lead guitar), Peter Klein (bass) and Bradley Cumming (drums) – the band’s songs range from the lyrically powerful Overwhelmed to the thumping bass grooves offirst single Give It Up.
Despite the current state of our world, Skylight are still crazy enough to believe that things can change for the better and their music represents exactly that.
These days, it’s rare to find a rock band with the ability to combine high-energy guitar riffs with complementary meaningful lyrics. Yet, the band’s debut album Made For More, is the perfect balance of socially aware rock and sentimental ballads. Highly diverse and innovative, their sound is fresh and uncontrived, yet enjoyable.
Skylight’s roots can be traced back to 2009 when three like-minded musos – Greg Jorden, Peter Klein and Bradley Cumming – joined forces after performing together at a music event. The trio soon began writing music together, the chemistry instantaneous, and their individual visions started to take form.
In 2010 the band entered the SA’s Got Talent reality competition and placed in the Top 20. Judge Randall Abrahams, now Managing Director of Universal, likened Greg’s voice to that of Chris Martin from Coldplay.
Their song Always Enough became an instant hit and secured them a spot on the “Joburg Day” line-up later that year, performing in front of 18 000 people.
In 2011 the band entered the studio with Grammy- and SAMA-winning producer Darryl Torr to record their full length debut album. It was here that they met guitarist Wesley Ayliffe and Skylight became the four-piece they are today.
The band has explored new heights, taking their sound to a whole different level, yet one that’s still typically Skylight. Their debut album, Made For More – a fantastically polished progression of hits – is set for release in early August.
“It’s time to fight for the things we believe in and be bold enough to actually live it out” says Greg.
Why did you select this song as your current single?
Definitely for the slide guitar intro. It’s melodically strong and Darryl Torr, our producer, did a great job with the production. We are also addicted to songs that encourage people to keep dreaming.
How does this single relate to the rest of the Album, EP or Mix-tape?
Like members of a family… different, but together. More Than Ever has the same heart of the album, but expresses it differently to the other songs on Made For More.
What was the writing process for the song?
Brad (our drummer) and I were jamming before playing at a wedding, and he came up with an amazing drum groove. The chords and melody came instantly. I wrote most of the lyrics on a morning run in Jeffrey’s Bay. We re-wrote the chorus after Darryl Torr said we could do better. And now we have More Than Ever as it sounds.
What does this song’s lyric mean to you?
We all need someone to help us believe in ourselves again at points in our life. I’ve been fortunate to have many people encourage me along the way.
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
Worth the price of your ticket. We play our hearts out every time. Plus you’d get to see Wesley’s afro and Pete’s super good looks.
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
Yes! It captures our passion and musicality.
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
No video planned… yet.
One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
I hate seeing people just getting through life… we were all made for so much more.
