Check out this great new interview we did with this great band.
Why did you select this song as your current single?
We chose “Late Nights” as our current single because it’s definitely one of those songs that I connected with — it has an element of struggle in it and questions of how or if it is possible to overcome that struggle.    This song was actually recently featured in a Canon commercial so we are pretty excited about that.
How does this single relate to the rest of the, “Baby Steps” album?
The song stands out because it kind of contrasts the different qualities inherent in my brother’s songwriting compared to mine, especially on this record.  Andrew often has an optimistic outlook.  He wrote and sings the bridge in the song and I think the bridge has an optimistic tone that injects an ‘everything will be all right’ tone to an otherwise darker story throughout.
What was the writing process for the song?
“Late Nights” was initially written over the course of a couple of days while I was alone on the edge of my bed at home before a day in the studio.  It was actually demoed in the studio with a completely different feel including a driving bass line and a long guitar solo where the bridge is now.  That demo lacked a lot of the emotion we were looking for.  So I sat down with Andrew and we set the song to more of a groove and that’s when Andrew created the new guitar lick that you hear in the intro, reintro, and outtro.  We wrote new lyrics for the verse melody and I sang lower notes so that the verse can tell more of a story while the chorus could drive the point home accentuated with more vocally higher notes.
What does this song’s lyric mean to you?
The song is about trying to overcome bad habits and continually saying that you are committed to changing without really believing it yourself.  So you end up in this situation where you continue the bad habits and the struggle because if you don’t really believe that you can do something words don’t matter anymore–you won’t really do it.  You end up just saying you’ll change for the better to appease other people or to appease the part of your mind that is telling you that you aren’t doing the right thing.  For example, right after the first chorus ends with “Say you’re gonna’ change” the second verse goes into “Woke up head on the floor…”  Making a change has to start with belief in yourself that you can be a better person.  I can only speak for myself but I think most people can relate to this feeling.
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
Performing this song live is a lot of fun for me because we can really have fun, groove out, and I know I’m singing something that’s very meaningful to me.
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
I don’t think so.  This is a side of me that I needed to write about but I believe that music is a constantly evolving art.  As I grow as a songwriter and musician I’m sure my writing style will change—in a lot of ways it already has. So I wouldn’t want anyone to think this is a style I will stick with forever but I do enjoy it.
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
We wanted to get that dark vibe that we got from the music.  It tells a little bit of a story while also showing a lot of the band playing it in the studio.  This was produced by Tom Flynn who also engineered and co-produced the song in the studio!  Here is the music video:
One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
The motivation behind our music is to make this our career, to make music we love, and to have fun doing it.
