O2Y comes from Styria, Austria and was founded by Stephan Vrecer (21), Florian Schmuck (21) and Florian Friedrich (19). Or just Steve, Flo and Flo ;)Before they started with O2Y they made music together since more than 3 years. Steve’s previous band was the indicator for that. O2Y is the successor of this band and it reflects the new style of music they created over these years.
The band comes up with a diversity of booming drums and electric guitars, but also with awesome acoustic shows. With the foundation of the band in October 2014, they released their first album “The Y stands for many” and their first single “I can’t sing and I can’t dance”.
The next album “On 2 manY things” is going to get released in February 2015. It is an acoustic album of the same great music.
Check out their brand new single, “I cant sing and I cant dance”.
Why did you select this song as your current single?
It was the last song to be put on the album. We wrote it like 2 weeks before the release when we already had the other songs recorded and mixed. And when we played it the very first time, to show it our producer, we said “we need this track on the upcoming album and it has to be the single”. It was so catchy and funny that it perfectly represented what we are.
How does this single relate to the rest of the album?
Well its about a guy who has like social anxiety and doesnt enjoy partying and only does it to please his girlfriend which is like the complete opposite of “Love for a night” where there is someone enjoying social events and going out clubbing that has no relationship or regular life. So its pretty contrary to this song but it totally embraces the concept of “Looser”. (laughs)
What was the writing process for the song?
I wrote the chorus for a different song actually for “Love for a night”. I had the verse of “Love for a night” and kind of wanted to write a chorus related to partying and the only thing i could come up with at this point was that i could actually not dance and didnt like going out at all. The chorus however turned out to be way to much pop in combination with the verse of “Love for a night” which is rather bold and a bit hispanic. To be honest i really hated the chorus of “I cant sing and I cant dance” when i wrote it but i really fell in love with it the next day i listened to it.
What does this songs lyrics mean to you?
Since it is about a guy who doesnt enjoy going out clubbing and who definitley cant dance and only does it to please his girlfriend it perfectly describes how i feel about that. Except for the singing part i guess i can sing, at least a bit.
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
For myself? Probably a bit weird since I would be on stage playing, singing and at the same time I would be infront of the stage watching myself doing that. No actually it would be pretty interesting to watch myself on stage. We always have so much fun performing and dancing, yes we dance eventhough we cant but that makes it just funnier, so i guess it would be really cool seeing those 3 guys dancing and singin their heart out.
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
Well except for the singing part i would say so yes. It is catchy and funny and we definitley cant dance I dont know how often we will stress this in this interview but it is just true. (laughs) No honestly it is pretty pop and fun thats just what we are.
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
Yes weve done a video to this song in october. The idea behind it was to turn the lyrics into a script for a video. So we just invited a few friends, build a stage in our cellar and turned it into something you could mistake for a club. We played the song and let em dance and our two protagonists had to act all that awful stuff we made up in the song.
One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
We just love writing songs. We dont want to change the world or talk people into recycling, eating vegan or political stuff we just really love making music, we are musicians. I mean there are of course messages hidden or openly promoted by our songs but the main point has always been and will always be making music and writing songs.
