Music: Ghost Dime by Moondog Matinee – NV

moondog cargo rock subcultureYou have to listen to Moondog Matinee. They are so different but so damn good. Check out their new single ” Ghost Dime” and check out why they are so damn good.
Why did you select this song as your current single?
We selected the song “Ghost Dime” as our current single because it really shows off a lot of different aspects of who we are as a band. This song seems to be one of our most accessible tracks, and many of our friends and fans have selected this song as their favorite track on the new album.
How does this single relate to the rest of the album, EP, or mix tape?
Oddly enough, this is one of the tracks that sort of stands out on the album. It’s not quite as riff oriented as a couple of the tracks, and not quite as melodic or pop based as some of the others. It fits somewhere in the middle, a nice blend of many of the elements we’ve incorporated into the album.
What was the writing process for this song?
The writing process for this song was the same process used for many of the songs on the album. It started with us just getting together and jamming. Once we settle into a groove that we like, we try to throw some hooks on top of it. Then, once the music is solidified, we create the vocal pattern, and eventually the words become solidified. In this case, the lyrics happened to tell a story, based on some real, and strange, events.
What does this song’s lyric mean to you?
The lyrics of this song actually refer to some strange happenings at a restaurant/bar a couple of our members used to work at. Every night, as Pete, our vocalist and lyricist, was closing up, he would find a dime on the floor, many times even after the floor had been swept and everyone else had gone. Whether this was some elaborate prank, strange coincidence, or something of the supernatural variety, we’ll never really know.
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
This song takes on an entirely different energy live. People love dancing to it, and we use it to really set the mood at a show. Sometimes we’ll start our set with this song, just to get the crowd going. We have a lot of fun playing it, and you’d notice that it’s probably much more energetic in person than on the album, which has a pretty relaxed, really in the groove feel to it.
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
Not to sound too cliché, but yes and no. It doesn’t necessarily sound like many of the other songs we write or perform, so in that aspect, it would be tough to summarize who we are based solely on this song. However, our fans that have been with us from the beginning also know that we love having a few tracks that show a different side to our music; where we can take ourselves when we forget about our normal tendencies and are comfortable writing music outside of our traditional genre. In that regard, our fans could certainly use this track to summarize who we are.
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
We do have a video for this song. It’s a video we worked on with some very talented friends of ours in Reno, who do an entire series of local artists performing live in unusual environments. So the video is of us performing to ourselves in a warehouse near where we practice. It was shot completely live, as though we were performing in front of an audience. Consider it our Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii (albeit, not NEARLY as cool as theirs)!
One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
Our motivation behind our music is simple: to play the music we love to play, inspired by artists we love to listen to, that hopefully some day will inspire other artists to make music of their own. We love performing live, and our music is a representation of that attitude.
