Music: Clouds by Cruzmatik – Santa Cruz,CA

clouds --Meet Cruzmatik, a collaboration of two veterans from the music world who have come together for the first time and put together a fresh new sound that will most surely appeal to fans of all kinds of music. Featuring rapper/producer FMZ and singer/songwriter JWillz, these two lifelong friends are bringing their unique styles together to create an album that will rock the clubs as well as the streets, and make you bob your head. Reggie Stephens, who also goes by the name Famouz, or FMZ, is a former player for the New York Giants and the Arena Football League’s Nashville Kats. FMZ gained notoriety for being the first person to legally sample a Jon Bon Jovi song on a hip-hop track (“Bad Name,” from his debut album, Ghetto Passport).
In addition to Bon Jovi, FMZ has worked with the likes of E-40, Bun B, DJ Unk, and Rankin Scroo. Jason Williams, aka JWillz, has been the lead singer of the group Ribsy’s Nickel for 12 years. Growing up in one of California’s premiere surf towns (Santa Cruz), JWillz and Ribsy’s have been playing their catchy surf/reggae/rock music up and down the California coast for close to 12 years, sharing the stage with bands like Slightly Stoopid, Pepper, The Expendables, Fishbone, Travis Larson Band and The Chop Tops.
FMZ and JWillz have known each other for years, and FMZ, recognizing the talent JWillz possessed as an artist, encouraged him to come into the studio and see if they could create some magic. Their first song together, “Not Gone Wur Bout It,” which they have performed to raucous crowds at a few Ribsy’s Nickel shows, sparked their creativity, and the rest was history. Now, with their debut album set to drop, Cruzmatik is set to shake up the music world and give fans a taste of the talent that exists from the 831.
Check out this great interview with Cruzmatik talking about their new single, “Clouds”. Video Coming SOON!!!
Why did you select this song as your current single?
We selected “Clouds” as our single to change things up bit. We wanted to put out something positive because we feel that music can inspire and motivate people that are on the fence about what they want to do in life. We’ve both gone through some similar feelings and we just put it on wax and hope it will be able to reach and help other people push through their hard times.
How does this single relate to the rest of the Album, EP or Mix-tape?
This song is really the glue that holds the rest of the album together. Our upcoming album is full of different styles of music so without a track like “Clouds,” Cruzmatik might not have a clear identity. This song ties everything together and lets our fans know we are on a mission to be the best group we can be. It also shows that we want to give back and help others any chance we get.
What was the writing process for the song?
The writing process was easy once we got the beat from one our beat makers named Jeffro. After that, our producer, Justin Dublin Beat’s got a hold of it and enhanced the mix/developed how the chorus would go and the rest is history. With Cruzmatik, we normally write all our songs in the car when we are going back and forth between Santa Cruz and Los Angeles.
What does this song’s lyric mean to you?
The songs lyrical content means just go for it and don’t look back. Don’t listen to the haters and people that don’t believe in you. The “What you waiting on?” lyric basically means, Why are you waiting to be successful? Go for it!
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
Performing this song live involves lots of energy and ideally we’d love to do it with a live band and DJ. Overall we want to inspire the crowd and let them know they can do anything they put their minds to. Cruzmatik is living proof!
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
Yes, I think our fans can summarize us from listening to “Clouds” if they have been with us from when we started the group 2 years ago. We have been through up and downs and we are still here pushing hard and accepting any challenge thrown our way. J Willz has 12 years of music experience and FMZ has 10 years and we believe our time is now since we’ve united to become Cruzmatik.
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
There is a video for “Clouds” that’s already been shot. The concept is simple: we focused on shooting it in our hometown of Santa Cruz and we wanted to feature some athletes that made it out of our small town and went on to be successful through pain and struggle. We also worked with assistant movie director Craig Comstock (42, Chasing Mavericks, Here Comes the Boom) on this video. He helped with a visual concept that is different than most videos that are coming out no. We wanted to focus on sunsets, mountain tops, athletes, and of course, clouds. A lot of different visuals from our previous videos. We are really excited to release the video, “Clouds” looks amazing!!!
One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
The motivation behind our music is the CRUZ MATIK LIFE STYLE –  CMLS. When we started Cruzmatik we wanted to make fun, motivational, inspiring music and find a way to give back to people and our community. We are proud to say we’ve done that. We work with a Santa Cruz-based charity called Grind Out Hunger ( which strives to empower youth to become leaders in the fight against childhood hunger and malnutrition. We also give back by participating in sports and fitness for kids and by inspiring everyday through our music and concerts. Bottom line: We want to grow as group and leave something behind when we’re done, something that our fans will remember about us.
