Why did you select this song as your single?
I selected this song as the single because it contains all of the elements of my band that I think people would need to hear in order to decide whether or not they like us. There are elements of jazz, funk, soul, a great modulated solo section, excellent horn lines, and the lyrics tell a story that everyone can relate to.
How does this single relate to the rest of the Album, EP or Mix-tape?
This single sets up the rest of the album as a starting point stylistically. There are songs that dip more into the Motown vibe, and there are songs that dip more into the funk fusion world, but the middle of the road song is this single. Lyrically, the story Black White and Gray tells is the ultimate (unintentional) theme of this album. It is a tale of heartache and woe.
What was the writing process for the song?
I generally will write most of if not the entire song musically before applying lyrics. I am always playing with melodies and horn lines in my head. Every now and then one of those ideas gets stuck in there and it evolves itself into a full song. Black White and Gray was no exception. I had written the main horn line with the bouncing between the bari sax and the rest of the section and wanted to play with something rhythmically simple under it.
What does this song’s lyric mean to you?
This song, lyrically, describes the ending of a love that was seemingly true. It dictates the suspicions and ultimate dismissal of the relationship with “And I don’t give a damn if you’ve got nowhere to go, cause I won’t be waiting for you”. This is something I believe every person has had to deal with at one point or another, but it glorifies the process of moving on, which is something some people need to hear from time to time.
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
Our live performance is full of energy. We believe in what we are doing and I believe what I’m singing about. I think if you were to come into one of our shows having only heard this one song, you would be very pleased at the variety and the presentation. I believe you would believe what I’m singing about and allow yourself to be captured by the music and the energy in the room.
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
Listeners are getting a very solid view of the whole of what we do through this song. There are elements of several different styles while still maintaining OUR style. I think this is a great introduction to who we are and what we love to do.
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
We don’t have a video or a plan for one, however, we are releasing a live album version of this studio album in December, 2014. We wanted to capture the energy and the onstage relationship between the 9 of us. There is tremendous chemistry that you can only understand through a live show. We captured this to the best of our ability on this live album.
One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
Our motivation to make music is to make something that is real and that we believe in. I like to write music that I think I would enjoy listening to. I do my best to paint a picture with my words and give the audience whatever they need to latch on to. At the end of the day, if I am releasing a product that I am proud of, then I feel that I am doing my job and people will enjoy it.
