Music: Alone Tonight by Winslow

ARTIST COMMENT:

Why did you select this song as your current single?

We did some testing with some of our fans and found that a ton of people responded in a positive way to it. I don’t know what it is, but there is something about the song that seems to connect with a lot of people. There’s soul, rock, and danceable pop, with a Latin flare. I’ve heard many people say that it reminds them of Maroon 5. To me, it feels like a more rockin’ version of the music that came out with Carlos Santana in the 90’s. If you take all of that and package it with the fact that the song was mixed by Nick Chahwala (Katy Perry, Mariah Carey, Gym Class Heroes), it just seemed like the perfect first song to re-introduce Winslow to the world.

If there is a video for the song, please explain the concept?

This is our first national music video, so we really had to do some soul searching before we filmed it. At first, we were going to do a video with hot women and all of that but something didn’t feel right about that idea. What separates us from other artists is our sound. Doing a performance video just seemed like the best way to go. Inda Blatch-Geib was the perfect stylist for the video. It is tough to create a video about a woman…. without the woman. I think she helped us pull it off. We were pumped that Madwerkz Studios was able to do such great things with our video. We hope people dig it as much as we do.

Please tell us how this single relate to the rest of the Album?

I think this song is a great representation of the rest of the album. This song definitely has more rock than some other tunes on the album. “Alone Tonight” really is a melding of multiple genres within one song. I would say that is Left of the Right Direction in a nutshell. To be honest, Alone Tonight is one of the only songs that doesn’t have a deep inspirational meaning behind it. Like every other song, it was about real life events. I’d say this is one of the lightest tunes but it sets the table for our musical diversity that is to come on the rest of the album.

What was the writing process for the song?

The funny thing is that this song really was the culmination of a couple song ideas. Our sax player Matt and I both had ideas for a song with Latin undertones. I had the first verse written by the time Curtis, Matt, and I sat down for a writing session. We realized that Matt’s concept fit perfectly with mine. It only took us well over a year to come up with the arrangement that you hear on the album. We found ourselves complicating the groove a bit and the song started to get too full. During pre-production, we decided to go back to basics and just simplify. I think it made things easier to just bob your head to.

Please tell what it would be like to see you in person performing this song?

Winslow live is a high energy good time. People are usually surprised by how much rock is in our sound live. There’s a passion and energy that we can’t capture in a studio no matter how hard we try. This song and every other one is really an experience that we hope will engage people. We try to make our fans forget about their normal life for that hour and just get buried in the vibe and the music.
