Midnight In Echo

Singer, songwriter Brice Sedgwick released “Midnight in Echo” off of his album “Pacifico.” Check out the story behind the writing process.
Why did you select this song as your current single?
Midnight In Echo – I wrote this song after spending time in the east side suburb of Echo Park in Los Angeles. At the time when I started writing it, i had already flown back to London. I wanted to release something that reflected me, my story, but would also be accessible as a soundtrack to others.
How does this single relate to the rest of the Album, EP or Mix-tape?
I’ve fused a few different elements into Midnight In Echo; hip hop beats, cinematic strings reminiscent of 60’s Hollywood, and it reflects in the album as a whole; I wanted to keep the sounds diverse.
What was the writing process for the song?
I started with a title, which i rarely do, but because i had spent time in Echo Park, and found myself awake at midnight talking to someone about love, life and the universe… it progressed from there. I wrote turns of phrases, i shaped how the song was, and what sounds i could foresee suiting the song. The next time i was in LA, i found myself completing the song with a deadline to be in the studio, at a piano store in Korea Town. They would allow me to use their pianos for an hour before opening, which got the adrenaline pumping, and was extremely generous of them. Once in the studio, we felt it needed a vocal sample to cut through there atmosphere of the strings, and we created a sample of us yelling, one take, and it made the cut.
What does this song’s lyric mean to you?
My songs… sometimes they’re 100% autobiographical, sometimes I’ve taken stories and inspiration from others, and sometimes both. I like to keep people guessing, but at the same time enough space for them to make it their own, and create their own world within the music I’ve made. Midnight In Echo, however… If you’ve ever been racing against the clock, at midnight, you’re tired, emotional, and wondering if you’re in love, what will happen… but then you find yourself weeks later wishing you’d be back in that emotional chaos, because it’s worth it, that’s what the song is about.
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
Hopefully entertaining, hopefully I can tell my story, and the audience can begin to create their own fantasy within the song, on their way home during a repeat listen to the CD.
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
Yep, eclectic, wordy, romantic.
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
There is. We shot a video on a roof top in the Arts District in Los Angeles; We wanted to keep it simple, effective; we went mad with jump cuts!

One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
I want to tell stories worth telling, not hiding from the truth, or bad language, or uncomfortable situations; I want to get as much off my chest as possible; and allowing people to add to the soundtrack of their own life.
