Why did you select this song as your current single?

AMARU: I am on my fourth single as we speak and I am working towards the release of my album, which I hope to release in early 2017.
I intended to wait with the release of this single, but I thought it was too good to be shelved until next year, so hence.
How does this single relate to the rest of the album?

AMARU: This single, “Independence Day“, is my most personal song to date and the rest of the songs will be just as catchy and poppy and personal as this one. My intention is to write songs that will make you dance and think at the same time.
What was the writing process for the song?
AMARU: Well, the song is about the relationship I never had with my biological father and in hind sight, I don’t think he ever wanted one. So after trying for many years to establish a relationship with him, to no avail, I decided to write about this chapter of my life. It started with one line of the chorus: “Without integrity there can’t be love“, for which I already had the melody. I sat myself down one afternoon to finish the chorus and within hours the entire song was born!
What do this song’s lyrics mean to you?
AMARU: The lyrics are very deep and meaningful to me, as this is a part of my life I never wanted to talk about. I was never able to identify with people who talked about their fathers, because I never had one. I did have a wonderful father figure, who died way too young, sadly. But there’s always that nagging feeling of “what if” and “why”, you know? So as mentioned earlier, this is my most personal work to date!
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
AMARU: I can’t wait to perform this new jam for the first time! I am planning a proper release party soon, which will hopefully be filmed and I am planning to give it my all, as I always do! And since “Independence Day” is a song about “letting go” and feeling “liberated from feelings of discontent”, I intend to bring that to the stage as well!
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
AMARU: I think that the message conveyed in this song resonates with many people (single parent households), so in that regard I think they would be able to get a better idea of me as a person, if anything. My style in music is rather eclectic and my current fan base knows what to expect from me, which is “the unexpected”. As we speak, I have finished mixing and mastering a salsa track called “Pa’ Mi Gente (For My People)“, in honor of my South American roots and as a tribute to my Latin people all over the world!
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
AMARU: Yes, there is actually. The video for my single “Independence Day” can be viewed on my official website at www.amaru.nl. The concept of the video is very simple and it contains a lot of metaphors and symbolism. I wanted to create a video that featured as many of the feelings I felt during that period of my life: sadness versus happiness, anger versus joy, that sort of thing. Hence the black and white outfits, for instance. The mirror represents “reflection”, as in “looking back”. I also wanted to include some footage of a father playing with his toddler son, I incorporated a photograph of myself as a toddler, which halfway into the video I tear. The rosary is symbolic for my mother. When we moved to Europe back in the early nineties, it was her first birthday gift to me. Featuring the rosary in my work is me honoring my mother, thanking her for all that she has done and is still doing for me and my brother. Lastly, I wanted a lyric video that looked different from all the lyric videos out now, so hence the partial lyric video instead! The graphics of the diamonds are a metaphor for rain, as in “when it rains, it pours”. At the end of the video the diamonds ascend back to the heavens, as if to say “I’ve had enough rain on my parade”, you know.
One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
AMARU: Life, love and the desire to become the best entertainer I can possibly be!
