The ‘Lucky Stars’ EP is the four track, digital release from the Sydney-based artist, SONIA.
Beginning her songwriting at the very early age of 12, SONIA draws on an impressive breadth and range
of topics and styles for someone still so young, citing her key influences are early to mid century jazz/blues, and old-school RnB.
In the past few years, having developed her skills by collaboration with other artists and producers, notably Michael Tan, John Hume, Charlie Midnight, Will Singe, Jhay Cabrera and Melisa Bester (E^ST) —SONIA’s musical diversity and experience is reflected in her songs, and her writing and performance style.
SONIA’s natural talent—not having gone unnoticed in the industry, saw her solely selected by Robert Conley from a range of Australian students to participate in the 2014 APRA AMCOS, ’50 Songs in 5 Days’.
Outsourcing the production on her Lucky Stars EP to Melbourne-based Jhay Cabrera (responsible for
US chart topper ‘Slay’ by Dance Moms’ Nia Sioux), SONIA’s naturally strong and soulful vocal resonate
throughout the EP, with Jhay’s equally as decisive and edgy sound and style.
The Lucky Stars EP is a complex passage of passion and euphoria, fear, anger, and regret; the raw
responses to the all the ups-and-downs of life as a new-age woman. The EP explores the struggle of finding
independence and a voice, experiencing heart break and loss, and finding strength to still defy
expectations and break through limitations.
SONIA’s unmistakable sass and lyrical edge, and the EP’s fresh combination of Pop energy, RnB melodies
and Soulful performance instantly take the listener on a fascinating and emotional journey. SONIA’s stylistic
interest in the “emotive and psychological reactions to events and people” makes for an overall eclectic
and diversely tempered EP. With each song inspired by real events, SONIA invites her listeners feel and
experience her personal life, her world and experiences in an overall enjoyable, captivating and intriguing
four-track experience.
