Chayah Takes us Higher

Christian Pop artist, Chayah Miranda (pronounced “kai-yah”) has spent much of her life around the gospel music of her church and the jazz influences of her mother and grandmother, both singers.  She began developing her talent at songwriting during high school with the help of Eric Gonzaga, a Bay Area producer whom she was introduced to after a performance at the annual Fiesta Filipina Fair in San Francisco. Together, they spent years developing Chayah’s sound and style while also working together to write songs for other local artists before she continued her musical education at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA.  This education, background has all played a role in her creating her single, “Higher” from her debut album, “No Other Way.” Check out this amazing interview we did with her about this higher level of music.
Why did you select this song as your current single?
I chose this song “Higher” to be my first single from my album because it is a song that has a very powerful message of hope. It tells of the struggle that we all face each day such as a mother going to work to make ends meet, to the young girl who feels she has no self worth, yet only to find that acceptance from her peers if she could just have that certain “designer handbag”, or the homeless person who is struggling to find something to eat, to the business man passing by. Higher is a song  that says there is something higher bigger than us and that is God. The lyrics say, “I want to lift you higher” which means I want to lift you up out of all the struggles and hardships that you may be going through and let you know that there is a God in heaven who loves you so much and wants you to know that this life here on earth is temporary and to have that hope and faith in God even in your darkest days.
How does this single relate to the rest of the Album?
I named the album “No Other Way” because I realized after having met Jesus, that there is no other way to really live life than to have Jesus in your life and at the center and foundation of your life. The whole album is about my walk and relationship with God, with Jesus. Each song talks about the different experiences that I’ve had in my relationship with God. So with “Higher” how it relates to the rest of the album is that it talks about the trials and struggles I have personally gone through. I took the struggles that I talk about in the song from my own life and put them into the song. I had to learn how to have that strong faith and hope in God to know that He is always there to lift my burdens from me.
What was the writing process for the song?
My producer, Josh Robinson, and I were just talking one day in the studio about life and the journey and struggles we’ve been through and he just started playing his guitar, and I just started humming the melody.  While he kept playing his guitar, I began to write the lyrics to the melody I was humming and before we knew it, we had the chorus to Higher. We both loved the sound and song it was turning out to be so we just continued to write the verses and then the bridge of the song. We then recorded a rough draft and really just went to work on the music production of the song. Once he had finished musically arranging and producing the music, I then started recording my lead vocals and then we added all the live instruments which was so much fun to see it all come together! It was such a fun and memorable experience creating this song Higher!
What does the songs lyric mean to you?
The lyrics of the song tells me to never ever give up on having faith and hope in God. It tells me that I am never alone even in my darkest and hardest days because God is there to lift me up to a better place beyond whatever it is that I am currently going through in that day or moment. The things we all go through in life can be very trying and very hard, yet whenever I listen to the words of this song, it gives me comfort and peace in knowing that God is on my side, strengthening me through my trials and reminding me that this is temporary and that I will see brighter days ahead.
What would it be like to see you performing this song?
I would hope that anyone who would see me performing this song Higher would feel inspired and that their spirits were uplifted. I would hope that they would be touched personally in a way that would give them strength, courage, and inspiration after seeing me perform this song. I would also hope that they would feel a certain desire to want to get to know Jesus and to really give Him a chance in their life.
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
Yes, I definitely think that my fans could summarize who I am as an artist based on this song because of the message that I bring through the song which is hope, love, positivity, encouragement and especially my love for people. Not only through the message in lyrics but also through the sound of the music. It has a very uplifting and inspiring sound to it which is who I am as a person and an artist. I always want to bring hope, love, encouragement, and inspiration to every person I meet.
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
Yes, there is an acoustic video for Higher which you can find on my youtube channel: Chayah Miranda. We decided to have me perform the song live in the studio and to do it acoustically with just the guitar and my vocal which turned out to be a video I really love. I really enjoyed making this video, and I would like to also make a video showing all the characters that I talk about in the song. I’d really love to bring those scenes to life.
What is your motivation behind your music?
My motivation behind my music is to let people know that there is a real God in heaven who really does love them. When I was bedridden and sick back in 2010, God healed me and showed me that He is real, and that He really does love me, you, and all of us. So for me, it is so important to get this message out there and to let people know that they are loved very much and to not loose hope in whatever it is that they are going through because God will meet them where they are no matter what. He did it for me, and He can do it for you too!
