Like many musicians, Ben Lorentzen’s journey began with ambition and an obsession with music. From Norway to New York, his career has intensified with a force as strong as his talents. His awesome songwriting abilities have caught the eye (or rather ear) of several artists that have performed his tunes. Musician, singer and artist, Ben Lorentzen is the real deal, much like his influences–Cave, Dylan, Cash, Drake and Cornell.
Haunting and contemplative; beautiful and melancholic, Ben Lorentzen’s music is genuine, and heartfelt. Lornenzten calls his music “Pop noir” and his voice and songs paint a picture of the human condition that certain souls know…the heights and depths where emotion can be at its most visceral and overwhelming. His depiction of life is both personal and universal. Pop can mean a lot of things, but Lorentzen’s pop is poignant and earnest, soulful and yes, a little dark. That said, his style is captivating in a way that a lot of dark artists’ aren’t.
Lorentzen conveys the search for the divine in everyday life that he and all of us are on.
His acclaimed release “America” is available now!
Check out his amazing single, “Bring Home the Angels” and then pick up his album. I really enjoyed this track and I will be listening to the full album.
Why did you select this song as your current single?
I didn’t! After I finished my record I was so dazed I couldn’t tell notes from sound or paper from pen. I was not in a state to be able to tell what would be the single. I purely went by feedback from my shows and people who had heard my album. Bring Home The Angels was the one “everybody” talked about. So I said: ok, I think that’s it….:)
How does this single relate to the rest of the Album, EP or Mix-tape?
It sums it up perfectly: moody, haunting, slightly dark but with a positive vibe underneath.
What was the writing process for the song?
Most of the song was written by a friend of mine. I added the bridge part and he was happy with it. It is perhaps my friends (Pim Johansen) best song, so I feel really lucky that I can use it.
What does this song’s lyric mean to you?
Once you find what is important to you: hang on to that with everything you got!
What would it be like to see you in person performing this song?
Hmmmmmm…….. No flying circus artists, no fireworks…. It’s a moody song. It’s night music. Or winter music. It’s music after you come home from a party, it’s music you put on just after getting up.
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
Yes, they could.
Is there a video planned and or completed and if so, what was the idea behind the video?
In the video I wanted to show old images of an American icon, since the title of the album is “America”. So I found old images of New York. I lived on Manhattan for many years and LOVE the city. I integrated the images “inside” of me, and I hope to tell the story of how America or New York is a part of me and a large part of my music. The images show every day life, and how we are all seeking the same things at the core of it. We always have and always will be.
One last question, what is your motivation behind your music?
Stir up the same emotions I have felt myself as I dug deep into this mystery that music really is.
