Album: “Grey”
Band: Northern Whale
Reviewer: Jaysen Gold
Score: 3 out of 5
The brand new CD from Austintown, Ohio based band Northern Whale boasts 8 tracks. The band played some big local festivals since their inception in 2009. The biggest of which, the Tri-C High School Rock Off in Cleveland, this EP is chock full of the songs that gave them success at those festivals.
From stand out tracks like “Janie” and “ANTS,” it’s evident that the band is full of talented musicians, though simplistic at times, their lyrics do repeat and tend to stick in your head. “Believe Us,” for instance, features the repeating line “truth keeps on coming, but you keep on running.” The hooks of the songs you’ll hear on Grey are sort of a departure from what you’re used to when listening to indie music, but they definitely perk your ears up a bit and, in some cases, make your brain come up with a different definition for indie rock.
If you’re a musician and looking for a CD that has a few really cool guitar riffs and drum loops to mimic, then Grey should be included in your collection. If you love live shows, the energy of the songs on Grey should lead to some great audience experiences, so keep checking imoveilive.com for your chance to check these guys out live at a venue near you.
