Check out a quick interview about their single, “Living the Dream.”
Why did you select this current song as your single? And how does it relate to the rest of your album or EP?
With the state of the music industry, A&L has taken a different approach with our music. Different than the traditional music industry cycle of releasing an album and choosing a single from the album. We record and release singles. When we have released five singles, we compile them into an EP. We just released an EP and this is our sixth song, so it was designated as the newest release. We feel this keeps us in the news cycle. We have new material to talk about. If you release an album and it does not catch on, your years’ worth of work is gone. Then what? This insulates us from a bad response. If the public does not like our song, we move on and in three months we are back. So far though, people/radio have liked our music.
What was the writing process for this song?
Our latest release is called Living the Dream. I wrote the song and brought it to rehearsal. This was one of the first songs that we all got a chance to practice and fine-tune the song before we went into the studio. I came up with the idea on the guitar and then wrote the words. I had this idea of wanting to have the last word. How would I approach negativity or a bully? My answer was live well. That’s the best revenge. The song took off from there. The words just came when I started to play the guitar chords. Lana nailed the vocal parts and Rich and Matt created the rhythm section that makes you want to get up and move.
What does the song’s lyrics mean to you?
This song is really a referendum on what is happening now in our communities. There is a lot of angst and some anger has surfaced due to this crazy time. The political environment has caused a lot of vitriol from both sides. The lyrics are push back and saying its alright to stand your ground. Live well, enjoy life. That’s the best way to rise above the negativity.
What would it be like seeing you in person perform this song live?
We just finished up a gig a few days ago. I can say, A&L puts on a great show. We had a blast. Pure rock and roll. We all were soaked after we played. It was awesome! It is hard to stand still when we play this song. I love seeing the crowd’s reaction. We play this late in our set, so we are firing on all cylinders at this point in the show.
Could your fans summarize who you are as an artist by this song?
That is a tough question. Me personally, probably so. I cannot speak for the rest of the band.
I do feel that the song’s style represents A&L to a tee. Its upbeat, there are great harmonies, killer bass line, great drum-breaks and a cool guitar solo. The perfect combination.
Is there a video completed or in the works? If so what is the idea behind it?
We have a live video of the song. We were planning to show a video. We have access to a yacht, so Living the Dream may take on a whole new meaning.
One last question, what is the motivation behind your music.
Passion. I feel that we all love to play. If we can have some success with our music than that is a bonus. We have been fortunate enough to have support at radio and landed on a few charts. That’s a great feeling.
